Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta Launches AI Shopping Assistant in Bold Move to Challenge ChatGPT and Google
In a strategic push to dominate the rapidly expanding AI-driven e-commerce space, Meta has begun testing its own AI shopping assistant, directly challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. According to a recent Bloomberg report, the social media giant is rolling out the feature to select U.S.-based users, marking its aggressive entry into a market projected to skyrocket from $3.36 billion in 2024 to a staggering $28.54 billion by 2033.
Meta’s new tool, embedded within its Meta AI chatbot, allows users to search for products conversationallyโsay, ยซbest cat toysยปโand receive a horizontal carousel of curated recommendations, complete with prices, brand details, and links to external merchant sites. While users can’t purchase directly through Meta AI, the feature offers explanations for each recommendation, blending social discovery with shopping convenience.
This move positions Meta alongside other major players like Amazon’s Rufus, Klarna, Shopify, and eBay, all racing to integrate AI into the consumer shopping journey. However, industry analysts are skeptical about Meta’s unique value proposition. Forrester’s Sucharita Kodali called it a ยซcopycat move,ยป questioning whether Meta offers anything meaningfully better than Instagram’s existing shopping features.
Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT already provide similar AI shopping experiences, delivering curated product lists with images, prices, and store links. Yet, despite the hype, adoption remains limited. Gartner’s Brad Jashinsky warns that consumer trust is a significant hurdle, with nearly two-thirds of shoppers fearing biased AI recommendations. He also notes that changing consumer behavior is slowโmobile e-commerce only overtook desktop in 2023, 16 years after the iPhone’s debut.
As AI continues to reshape how people discover and buy products online, Meta’s latest gambit signals a broader industry shift toward more personalized, conversational shopping experiences. Whether it can carve out a distinct niche in this crowded and competitive landscape remains to be seen.
